Berlin is a vibrant, diverse city rich in history. Full of students, cultural attractions, and government offices, it is the perfect place to find an internship.

Looking for work experience in one of Europe's most fascinating cities? Here are a few Berlin internship options to consider. In addition, there are plenty of websites and search engines out there that can provide students with general information about finding an opportunity in Germany.

Getting Started on Researching Opportunities in Berlin

One useful resource is the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD, or German Academic Exchange Service). This is an organization that provides funding for various academic and work-related opportunities throughout Germany, and is a good place to begin the process of finding an internship in Germany.

For those still in college, the school's German department is another great place to start researching internship opportunities. Professors, advisors (including study abroad advisors) and fellow students who have studied in Germany are all god places to start.

Atlantik-Bruecke

The Atlantik-Bruecke (in English, "Atlantic bridge") is an organization that was founded in 1952 by Eric M. Warburg, who spent significant amounts of time in both the United States and Germany. Its main mission? The encouragement of positive, constructive German-American relations. See the website for more information about this organization, and to contact the Berlin office directly to inquire about internship opportunities. The organization also offers a Young Leaders Program, which is a week-long conference.

Bundestag Internship

The Bundestag is Germany's parliament, located in the infamous Reichstag building in Berlin. The internship program is a fantastic opportunity known as the EMGIP (Émigré Memorial German Internship Program), and it is open to U.S. and Canadian students. It is possible to complete an internship there while studying abroad in Germany, even during the lengthy semester break between the Sommersemester and Wintersemester from mid-February through late April. More information about this program can be found on the DAAD website.

The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program and CDS International

Spanning the length of one academic year, this is a professional development program through CDS International. Placement is throughout Germany, including Berlin. Participants will gain experience in areas such as government, business, media, or law, among others. Highly competitive, this program is offered to just twenty American students. CDS International also offers a general internship program ranging from three months to one year, for which applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Additional Resources for Finding Opportunities in Germany

For information about funding for academic programs in Germany, there are several resources online. Websites such as workingabroad.org, transitionsabroad.com, and jobsabroad.com are good places to start, and do offer the opportunity to learn more about internship opportunities in Germany.

Berlin is one of the most popular destinations for interns interested in working in Germany, and the above opportunities through the DAAD, Atlantik-Bruecke, and the Robert Bosch Foundation are just a few of the great possibilities for students and recent graduates interested in gaining valuable work experiences in one of Germany's most vibrant cities.
